EMC on Wednesday acquired Configuresoft, maker of server configuration, change and compliance EMC on Wednesday acquired Configuresoft, maker of server configuration, change and compliance management solutions. The purchase expands EMC's storage and infrastructure management line. The two companies had been partnering since 2008 when they signed an OEM agreement, leading to the EMC Server Configuration Manager and EMC Configuration Analytics Manager, which automate visibility across physical and virtual environments. Terms of the deal, set to close in June, were not disclosed. — DK

McAfee acquires Solidcore

McAfee today announced the acquisition of dynamic whitelisting vendor Solidcore for approximately $33 million. The acquisition advances McAfee's endpoint security and risk management portfolio. Specifically, Solidcore enables McAfee to now provide security for automated teller machines (ATMs), point-of-sale (POS) systems, multifunction printers (MFPs), supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, as well as mobile and other embedded devices. In addition, it will strengthen McAfee's virtualization solutions, the company said in a news release. — AM
 

Oracle to acquire Virtual Iron

Redwood City, Calif.-based Oracle has agreed to acquire Virtual Iron Software, a vendor of server virtualization software that addresses a variety of data center issues. Oracle said the incorporation of Virtual Iron's technology is expected to provide more dynamic resource management across the full software stack. The deal is pending approvals and is expected to close this summer. Meanwhile, the companies will operate independently. Financial details were not disclosed. Symantec said in a news release that it expects the combination of its email gateway and endpoint security solutions with Mi5's web gateway technology can provide protection at entry points used for malware to infect network environments. Oracle buys Sun

Sun Microsystems will be acquired by Oracle in a deal valued at $7.4 billion, the company announced today. With the acquisition, Oracle gets the popular Java programming language, as well as the Solaris operating system, which has been a major platform for the Oracle database. Endpoint security solutions vendor Lumension announced on Monday its acquisition of Securityworks, an IT security, risk and compliance solutions vendor. The acquisition will enable Lumension to help organizations improve their overall security and risk posture, optimize IT resources, increase operational efficiency and reduce the cost and complexity of demonstrating compliance the company said in a news release. The IT governance, risk management and compliance (GRC) software market is expected to grow from $590 million in 2006 to $1.3 billion by 2011, according to Forrester Research. — AM

Web and email security vendor Marshal8e6 announced on Tuesday its acquisition of behavioral malware detection vendor Avinti for an undisclosed sum. The acquisition will better equip Marshal8e6 to stop blended email threats -- email that contains active malware content or links to websites where malware is downloaded, according to a statement from Marshal8e6. The acquisition follows the merger of Marshal and 8e6 Technologies last November. — AM
